Brave is a 2012 American animated fantasy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman[a][c], and produced by Katherine Sarafian, with John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter serving as executive producers. The story was written by Chapman, who also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Andrews, Purcell, and Irene Mecchi. The film stars the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson.
Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch (Macdonald) who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire not to be betrothed. When Queen Elinor (Thompson), her mother, is turned into a bear, Merida must look within herself and find the key to saving the kingdom. Merida is the first character in the Disney Princess line to be created by Pixar. The film is also dedicated to Pixar chairman and Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died before the film’s release.
Brave is Pixar’s first film with a female protagonist, and the first one animated with a new proprietary animation system, called Presto.[4] Originally titled The Bear and the Bow, the film was first announced in April 2008 alongside Up (2009) and Cars 2 (2011). Chapman, who had just wrapped up work as a story artist on Cars (2006), drew inspiration for the film’s story from her relationship with her own daughter. Co-directing with Andrews and Purcell, Chapman became Pixar’s first female director of a feature-length film.[5] To create the most complex visuals possible, Pixar completely rewrote their animation system for the first time in 25 years.[6][7][8] Brave is the first film to use the Dolby Atmos sound format.[9] The filmmakers created three original tartan patterns for three of the four clans in the film. Patrick Doyle composed the film’s musical score.
Brave premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 10, 2012, and was theatrically released in North America on June 22. Receiving generally positive reviews, it was a box office success, grossing $539 million against a $185 million budget. The film won the Academy Award,[10][11] the Golden Globe,[12] and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature Film.[13] Preceding the feature theatrically was a short film entitled La Luna, directed by Enrico Casarosa.[14]
In Medieval Scotland, a young Princess Merida of Clan Dunbroch celebrates her birthday and is given a bow and arrow by her father, King Fergus, dismaying his wife Queen Elinor. In the forest, Merida encounters a will-o’-the-wisp and follows the other wisps to her family and Mor’du, a huge demon bear, attacks the family. Fergus and his men fend off Mor’du, though the fight costs Fergus one of his legs.
Ten years later, Merida discovers she is to be betrothed to the son of one of her father’s allies. Failure to consent to the betrothal could harm Dunbroch; Elinor reminds Merida of a legend of a prince whose pride and refusal to follow his father’s wishes destroyed his kingdom.
The allied clan chieftains and their first-born sons arrive to compete in the Highland games for Merida’s hand in marriage. Twisting the rules, Merida announces that, as her own clan’s firstborn, she will compete for her own hand. She easily bests her suitors and, after arguing with Elinor, runs away into the forest. She encounters the wisps again, who lead her to the hut of an elderly witch, where she bargains for a spell to “change” Elinor. The witch gives her an enchanted cake.
Elinor eats the cake and is transformed into a bear, unable to speak but retaining most of her human consciousness. Merida returns to the deserted witch’s cottage, and discovers a message from the witch: she must “mend the bond, torn by pride” by the second sunrise, or the spell will become permanent. Merida and Elinor encounter Mor’du and realize Mor’du was the prince in the legend. Merida vows not to let the same thing happen to her mother, and concludes she needs to repair the family tapestry she deliberately damaged during their argument.
They return to the castle to find the clans on the verge of war. Merida intends to declare herself ready to choose a suitor as tradition demands, but at Elinor’s prompting, she instead allows the firstborns to marry in their own time to whomever they choose. The clans agree, breaking tradition but renewing their alliance.
Losing her humanity, Elinor attacks Fergus and flees the castle. Mistaking the Queen for Mor’du, Fergus pursues the bear with the other clans, locking Merida in the castle. Merida escapes with the assistance of her triplet brothers, who have become bear cubs after eating the enchanted cake. She repairs the tapestry as Fergus and the clans capture Elinor. Merida thwarts them before the real Mor’du arrives. Mor’du targets Merida, but Elinor intercedes, causing Mor’du to be crushed by a falling menhir. This releases the spirit of the prince, who thanks Merida for freeing him and transforms into a wisp. As the sun rises for the second time, Merida covers Elinor in the repaired tapestry, but she remains a bear. Thinking it was for nothing, Merida reconciles with her mother begging to have her back, unknowingly fulfilling the true meaning of the witch’s message. This reverses the spell’s effects on her mother and brothers.
Announced in April 2008 as The Bear and the Bow,[19] Brave is Pixar’s first fairy tale.[20][21][22] Writer and director Brenda Chapman considers it a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.[23] She also drew inspiration from her relationship with her daughter.[24] Chapman conceived the project and was announced as the film’s director, making her Pixar’s first female director,[25] but in October 2010, she was replaced by Mark Andrews after creative disagreements between her and John Lasseter.[26][3] Chapman found the news of her replacement “devastating”, but later stated that her “vision came through in the film” and that she remained “very proud of the movie, and that I ultimately stood up for myself.”[24][5] Chapman then stated in an interview in 2018 that while she was still bittersweet about being taken off the film and believed that there was no reason to do so creatively, she felt that it “opened more doors for me to have that happen”.[3] Brave is also the first Pixar film with a female protagonist and Pixar’s first film to have two credited directors.
Following his hiring as director, Mark Andrews did a major overhaul of the story to give more focus on Merida and her troubled relationship with her mother. Among others, he cleared away many magic elements, which he found affected the environment.[27] However, he wanted to stay truthful to Chapman’s story. He said: “The bones of the film were totally fine. That was not the issue. What was hanging off the bones, there were problems. There were things that were not working. The focuses and balances that were out of whack.”[28]
Brave is the first Pixar film starring a female protagonist.[5] In that respect, Brave was followed by Inside Out, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, Turning Red, and Elemental, all of which featured female protagonists. In 2010, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, and Julie Walters joined the cast, with Witherspoon set to voice Merida.[30] According to Andrews, Witherspoon was on the project for “quite some time. She was getting her Scottish accent down, she was working very hard and it was sounding great but as we were continuing with the movie she had other movies lining up, so unfortunately we were unable to continue with her and had to get a replacement.”[31] Instead, in 2011 it was revealed that Merida was to be voiced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.[32] In 2017, during a press junket for Illumination’s Sing, Witherspoon mentioned that she had to leave the film due to failure to master a Scottish accent.[33]
The score for Brave was composed by Patrick Doyle and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra was conducted by James Shearman. To bring some of Scotland’s native flavor to the music, Doyle used traditional Celtic instruments such as bagpipes, a solo fiddle, Celtic harps, flutes and the bodhrn (a tunable, handheld frame drum), with an electronically treated dulcimer and cimbalom to give it a more contemporary feel. “I employed many classic Scottish dance rhythms such as reels, jigs, and strathspeys, which not only serve the action but keep it authentic,” said Doyle.[34] As part of his research, he spent time in the Hebrides studying “unaccompanied Gaelic psalm singing.”[35]
Doyle also composed several songs for the film. The lullaby duet between characters Princess Merida and Queen Elinor entitled “A Mhaighdean Uasal Bhan (Noble Maiden Fair)” appears on three occasions in different variations within the fabric of the score, and uniquely includes Gaelic vocals by Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker, the first Disney film with music featuring the language.[citation needed] The drinking song “Song of Mor’du” (lyrics by Doyle and Steve Purcell) sung by Billy Connolly, Scott Davies, Patrick Doyle, Gordon Neville, Alex Norton and Carey Wilson, features a rich variety of words, sung authentically in Scots, which is distinct from Scottish Gaelic. (Scots being a Germanic language, while Scottish Gaelic is Celtic.)
In addition to Doyle’s music, the film features three other original songs; “Learn Me Right” written by Mumford & Sons and performed with Birdy, “Touch the Sky” (music by Alex Mandel, lyrics by Mark Andrews & Mandel) and “Into the Open Air” (music and lyrics by Alex Mandel). Both “Touch the Sky” and “Into the Open Air” were performed by Julie Fowlis, as Merida’s off-screen musical thoughts. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a commercial Linux distribution developed by Red Hat. As Red Hat Enterprise Linux is heavily based on open-source software and its source code is available to the public, it is used as the basis for several third-party derivatives, including the commercial Oracle Linux and the community-supported Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux. Prior to June 2023, Red Hat published a sub-set of Red Hat Enterprise Linux’s source code to the public in the form of modified build artifacts. Today, the complete source code for the major-version branch is available in the form of the CentOS Stream repositories.[9] Source code for other release branches remains available to customers in the form of unmodified build artifacts.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server subscription is available at no cost for development purposes.[10] Developers need to register for the Red Hat Developer Program and agree to its license terms. The free developer subscription was announced on March 31, 2016, and updated in January 2021 with less restrictive terms.[11]
There are also “Academic” editions of the Desktop and Server variants.[12] They are offered to schools and students, are less expensive, and are provided with Red Hat technical support as an optional extra. Web support based on the number of customer contacts can be purchased separately.
It is often assumed the branding ES, AS, and WS stand for “Entry-level Server”,[13][14] “Advanced Server” and “Work Station”, respectively. The reason for this is that the ES product is indeed the company’s base enterprise server product, while AS is the more advanced product. However, nowhere on its site or in its literature does Red Hat say what AS, ES, and WS stand for.
Fedora is a free distribution and community project and upstream for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Fedora is a general purpose system that gives Red Hat and the rest of its contributor community the chance to innovate rapidly with new technologies. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a commercial enterprise operating system and has its own set of test phases including alpha and beta releases which are separate and distinct from Fedora development.
Originally, Red Hat sold boxed versions of Red Hat Linux directly to consumers and business through phone support. The Fedora Project began in 2002 as a set of community supported packages for Red Hat Linux. However, the six month release cycle of Red Hat Linux was too disruptive for business users and Red Hat wanted a more reliable revenue stream. In 2002 Red Hat began releasing Red Hat Enterprise Linux based on Red Hat Linux, but with a much more conservative release cycle and a subscription based support program. A year later, Red Hat discontinued the Red Hat Linux product line, merging it with the Fedora community packages and releasing the resulting Fedora distribution for free.[19]
Fedora serves as the primary upstream for future major releases of RHEL: RHEL source code repositories are forked off the Fedora repository, and released after a substantial stabilization and quality assurance effort.[20] The major-version stable release branch is built and released by the CentOS project under the name CentOS Stream. Each minor version of RHEL is a branch of CentOS Stream that gets ongoing bug fixes and security updates.
In addition, the Fedora project publishes a set of packages for RHEL called the Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL). EPEL packages can be expected to work in RHEL, but it is up to willing community members to maintain the packages and back port any upstream changes. As such, packages “may come and go” during the ten-year lifespan of the RHEL release and Red Hat support plans do not include resolving issues caused by EPEL packages.[24]
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is derived from free and open source software. Until 2015, Red Hat made the source code to its enterprise distribution publicly available through its FTP website, though the inclusion of Red Hat trademarks prevented direct redistribution of the software. In 2015, Red Hat began publishing de-branded source code via git repositories on git.centos.org.[25] Several groups used the source code to compile their own derivatives, typically with changes including the removal of any references to Red Hat’s trademarks and pointing the update systems to non-Red Hat servers. Groups which have undertaken this include AlmaLinux, CentOS, MIRACLE LINUX, Oracle Linux, CloudLinux OS, Rocky Linux, Scientific Linux, StartCom Enterprise Linux, Pie Box Enterprise Linux, X/OS, Lineox, and Bull’s XBAS for high-performance computing.[26][additional citation(s) needed]
In 2023, Red Hat replaced the process that published code to git.centos.org in favor of the CentOS Stream git repositories. As required by its open-source licenses, the code for branched releases remains available to customers and developers, but the customer contract allows Red Hat to drop any customer who provides third-parties with access to subscription services, discouraging them from publishing source code artifacts.[27][28] This led to AlmaLinux, one of the RHEL derivative Linux distributions, moving away from “1:1 bug for bug” compatibility to “application binary interface (ABI) compatible”, while Oracle, SUSE, and CIQ (the company behind Rocky Linux) collaborated to form the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA) in order to provide “open and free Enterprise Linux (EL) source code”.[29][30]
Derivatives of Red Hat Enterprise Linux are free but do not get any commercial support or consulting services from Red Hat and lack software, hardware or security certifications from Red Hat. They also do not get access to Red Hat services like Red Hat Network.
Unusually, Red Hat took steps to obfuscate their changes to the Linux kernel for RHEL 6.0 by not publicly providing the patch files for their changes in the source tarball, and only releasing the finished product in source form. Speculation suggested that the move was made to affect Oracle’s competing rebuild and support services, which further modifies the distribution. This practice however, still complies with the GNU GPL since source code is defined as “[the] preferred form of the work for making modifications to it”, and the distribution still complies with this definition.[31] Red Hat’s CTO Brian Stevens later confirmed the change, stating that certain information (such as patch information) would now only be provided to paying customers to make the Red Hat product more competitive against the growing number of companies offering support for products based on RHEL. CentOS developers had no objections to the change since they do not make any changes to the kernel beyond what is provided by Red Hat.[32] Their competitor Oracle announced in November 2012 that they were releasing a RedPatch service, which allows public view of the RHEL kernel changes, broken down by patch.[33][34] 99f5d2560f janamari
