वैदिक धर्म में वर्णव्यवस्था गुण-कर्म-स्वभाव से है।
१::-शूद्रो ब्राह्मणतां एति ब्राह्मणश्चैति शूद्रताम् ।
क्षत्रियाज्जातं एवं तु विद्याद्वैश्यात्तथैव च । ।
मनुस्मृति१०.६५ । ।:
ब्राह्मण शूद्र बन सकता और शूद्र ब्राह्मण हो सकता है | इसी प्रकार क्षत्रिय और वैश्य भी अपने वर्ण बदल सकते हैं |
२:-शुचिरुत्कृष्टशुश्रूषुर्मृदुवागनहंकृतः ।
ब्राह्मणाद्याश्रयो नित्यं उत्कृष्टां जातिं अश्नुते । ।
९.३३५ मनुस्मृति ।।
शरीर और मन से शुद्ध- पवित्र रहने वाला, उत्कृष्ट लोगों के सानिध्य में रहने वाला, मधुरभाषी, अहंकार से रहित, अपने से उत्कृष्ट वर्ण वालों की सेवा करने वाला शूद्र भी उत्तम ब्रह्म जन्म और द्विज वर्ण को प्राप्त कर लेता है |।
३:-उत्तमानुत्तमानेव गच्छन्हीनांस्तु वर्जयन् ।
ब्राह्मणः श्रेष्ठतां एति प्रत्यवायेन शूद्रताम् । । ४.२४५[२४६ं] । ।
ब्राह्मण- वर्णस्थ व्यक्ति श्रेष्ट – अति श्रेष्ट व्यक्तियों का संग करते हुए और नीच- नीचतर व्यक्तिओं का संग छोड़कर अधिक श्रेष्ट बनता जाता है | इसके विपरीत आचरण से पतित होकर वह शूद्र बन जाता है |
४:- न विशेषोsस्ति वर्णानां सर्वं ब्राह्ममिदं जगत्।
ब्रह्मणा पूर्वसृष्टं हि कर्मभिर्वर्णतां गतम्।।
( शांतिपर्व १८०/१०)
वर्णों में कोई भेद नहीं है। सृष्टि के आरंभ में सब ब्राह्मण ही थे। ब्रह्म से उत्पन्न होने से सब ब्रह्म के समान हैं। अपने कर्मों से अलग अलग वर्ण भाव को प्राप्त हुये।।
५:-चारों वर्णों को वेदाधिकार:- श्रावच्चतुरो वर्णान् कृत्वा ब्राह्मणग्रतः। वेदस्याध्ययनं हीदं तच्च कार्यं महत्स्मृतम्।। ( शांति. ३२७/४८) चारों वर्णों को वेद पढ़ावें।
६:-ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रियाः वैश्याः शूद्रा ये चाश्रितास्तपे।
दानधर्माग्निना शुद्धास्ते स्वर्गं यान्ति भारत!।। ( अश्वमेधिकापर्व ९१/३७)
जो ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य,शूद्र तप,दान,धर्म और अग्निहोत्र करते हैं, वे शुद्ध होकर स्वर्ग को प्राप्त करते हैं।
७:-ज्यायांसमपि शीलेन विहीनं नैव पूजयेत्।
अपि शूद्रं च धर्मज्ञं सद्वृत्तमभिपूजयेत्।।
( अनुशासन. ४८/४८)
सद्भाव विहीन उच्च वर्णस्थ का भी सत्कार न करे, किंतु धर्मज्ञ , सदाचारी, शूद्र का भी सत्कार करें।
अब हम महाभारत से कुछ वर्णपरिवर्तन के ऐतिहासिक प्रमाण दर्ज करते हैं-
१:- विश्वामित्र क्षत्रिय से ब्राह्मण बने:-
ब्राह्मण्यं लब्धवांस्तत्र विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः। सिंधुद्वीपश्च राजर्षिर्देवापिश्च महातपाः।।
ब्राह्मण्यं लब्धवान् यत्र विश्वामित्रस्तथा मुनि।।
( शल्यपर्व ३८/३६,३७)
विश्वामित्र क्षत्रियत्व से ब्राह्मणत्व को प्राप्त हुआ|
२:- मतंग चांडाल से ब्राह्मण बना:-
स्थाने मतंगो ब्राह्मण्यं चालभद् भरतर्षभ।
चंडालयोनौ जातो हि कथं ब्राह्मण्यमवाप्तवान्।।
( अनुशासन. ३/१९)
मतंग चांडाल से ब्राह्मण हो गया।
३:- पैजवन शूद्र ऋषि बन गया:-
शूद्रः पैदवनौ नाम सहस्राणां शतं ददौ।
ऐंद्रग्नेन विधानेन दक्षिणामिति नः श्रुतम्।।
( शांतिपर्व ६०/३९)
पैजवन ने सौ सहस्र गायें दान की तथा ऋग्वेद के सूक्तों का ऋषि हो गया।
४:- शुनको नाम विप्रर्षियस्य पुत्रोsथ शौनकः।
एवं विप्रत्वमगद् वीतहव्यो नराधिपः।।
( अनुशा. ३०/६५,६६) शुनक का पुत्र वीतहव्य क्षत्रिय वंशज शौनक ऋषि ब्राह्मण बन गये।
( यह वर्णपरिवर्तन के प्रमाण, स्वामी ब्रह्ममुनि की पुस्तक “महाभारत की विशेष शिक्षायें” से उद्धृत हैं।)
अतः इन सब प्रमाणों से सिद्ध होता है, कि वैदिक धर्म में न केवल गुणकर्मस्वभाव से वर्णव्यवस्था मानता है, बल्कि वैदिक इतिहास में कई वर्णपरिवर्तन भी हुये हैं।
